Sports is The New Black

Everything these days is much different than it used to be. It is the normal process of evolution actually. Things change to survive better in the world. Things evolve to their better versions because improvement is something that there’s always room for. Consider this, without the television you would not be watching your favorite tennis star playing the Wimbledon or the French Open. You would not even be aware of who your favorite tennis player unless you physically went to matches and decided which one it was. Your football leagues would not exist today were it not for the rapid change in communication and technology. Because these things are internationally accessible to vast populations, circumstances for athletes are now also different. As with any celebrity, one needs an agent and a manager.

Sports business management

Keeping this in mind, sports business management is the hot profession these days. Because athletes are given their own celebrity status, it is a highly lucrative field and there aren’t many sports managers because it’s so new. Hence, universities are now teaching these degrees at undergraduate levels for students or players who need a better understanding of how sports works from a business point of view. Managers have to handle everything for athletes from their contracts, to their travel, to participation to overseeing training and their training needs. Basically if you see an athlete at the top of his game, that’s only half of his effort; the rest comes from the manager in cultivating the talent and letting him make the right decisions. For many ex-players as well, management means a good way to stay engaged with the sport itself.

However, it’s not all glamour and games. Sports business management requires long hours from the agents/managers. It requires a lot of dedication and focus. Since your responsibility is to make your player or team the best one, you need a lot of in depth data on how every player functions and what his strengths and weaknesses are. This means spending long hours with the players, watching them play and talking to them. Sometimes your players need at odd hours or for odd commitments. You are basically at the disposal of other people while simultaneously building their careers. It is a lucrative job because of the business side and it’s a rewarding job because it’s almost like a mentor job. Either, it is a great career path if you’re passionate about sport.
